Primary resistance determines the amount of current that will flow through a coil. Lower is a higher current, higher resistance is a lower current. Therefore a super low primary resistance is best, right? Wrong! With all ignitions, a too high primary resistance will cause a weak spark, a too low primary resistance will cause the coil and ignition to overheat and eventually fail. That is why you have to stick to the ignition system manufacturer recommendations. Ignition systems using a mechanical advance cannot accurately control coil dwell time (time required to re-charge the ignition coil). Therefore primary resistance must be relatively high to prevent overheating, usually around 4 to 6 Ohm. Typically a mechanically advanced ignition will give high spark energy at low engine speeds, and a weak spark at high RPM. Electronic ignition can control dwell time and is timed to use a coil with specific primary resistance, usually around 2.5 to 3.5 Ohm. 99-up Twin Cams and 04-up XL Sportsters use coils with around 0.5 Ohm. Therefore Evo & Twin Cam style coils cannot be mixed. With a too low primary resistance the coil will not deliver more spark energy but just dissipates more heat into the coil and output transistors, causing overheating and premature failure. Inductivity determines the energy and speed of the coil. High inductivity gives higher energy, but lower speed. Low inductivity gives lower energy, but higher speed. A powerful coil, which is also fast, is possible... the trick is low inductivity but high current. With such a coil type dwell time must be fixed and it must match the coil.
