Inline trail, negative offset trail or positive offset trail. Inline: The forklegs are in-line with the fork stem. Negative: Forklegs are angled further backwards than the fork stem. Positive: Forklegs are angled further forward than the forkstem. The technique of correct trail Negative offset forks (front wheel further backward) increase trail, which makes the bike better to steer in a straight line, less wobbly / better tracking, for instance when equipped with a sidecar. Inline forks have less trail than negative forks. This makes the bike lighter to steer, lighter to corner and gives best all-round rideability on a stock solo bike. Positive offset forks (wheel further forward) give even less trail than an inline fork. When using a custom frame with a raked neck, trail is increased. Increased trail is fine, as long as it is in a straight line. The bike can become heavy to steer when riding slow, have a tendency to fall into the corner and have excessive 'wheel flop' when parked. To overcome these problems trail must be reduced, which is done with a positive trail fork. This is why only Over Stock length Springer forks are offered with a positive trail. Note 1: These Springer forks have no dampening system installed. A correct damper system is strongly advised to prevent loss of control, injury or death. Note 2: Incorrect trail can be dangerous.
