A straight rate spring only offers linear resistance to compression and is always a compromise. For example, if you have a 20lbs. straight rate spring it will take 20lbs. of force to compress the spring one inch. Then it will take another 20 lbs. of force to compress it the next inch, and so on, until the end of the travel. A Progressive Rate Spring has the advantage of a rising rate resistance to compression. For example, a 15lb. to 25lb. Progressive Rate Springs will take 15lbs. to compress it the first inch, then 17lbs. the next inch, and so on, until the end of the travel; it will take an additional 25lbs. to compress it the last inch. The benefit of this is that the spring can be soft enough at the start of the travel to offer a “plush” ride yet be firm enough at the end of the travel to soak up the big bumps. With approval All Progressive Suspension shocks that are offered here are approved, except where noted. Nitrogen (N2) filled All Progressive Suspension shocks are nitrogen pressurized to help prevent oil foaming and maintain best possible damping characteristics in extreme conditions. When Heavy Duty? If you are a lightweight rider with a lightweight passenger, heavy duty shocks will give you a harsh ride. For Big Guys & Gals with a lot of baggage, heavy duty spring are the way to go. Heavy Duty is not better, it's different. Heavy Duty shocks or springs are recommended to be used on motorcycles that are operated at or near the manufacturers maximum load rating over 50% of the time. Note: Black model 412 shocks may be supplied without lower cover. Abbreviations used: cvr = With Cover. 412 series - Good Best value Progressive Suspension shock, great as stock replacement. Nitrogen charged double steel wall body. Multi-staged velocity sensitive valving. Five position cam style pre-load adjustement. Note: Black model 412 shocks may be supplied without lower cover. 412 Cruise series - Good Flat-wire spring with progressive main spring lets a 12.5" shock sit like a 11.5" shock. Still, when the going gets tough, it will be able to use the full stroke when required. Basically this is a lowered shock, designed to ride like a regular length shock. With Nitrogen charged damper and 5-position pre-load. 416 series - Good Air shocks with an aluminum air chamber, heavy duty springs, air adjustability and velocity sensitive with multistage valving. Perfect for the Touring rider with varied loads. Replaceable main shaft and air seals. 422 series - Better Two inches of ride height adjustment and adjustable pre-load. High pressure gas system in a dual coil shock system. The shocks include a new fill valve to replace the stock one. Also available in the RAP (Remote Adjustment Pre-load) design. Chrome plated finish. 430 series - Better High pressure nitrogen charged with deflective disc damping. Threaded pre-load adjuster will allow adjustment without tools. Chromed steel body with machined aluminum spring covers. These shocks can be mounted upside down if desired. With chrome covers and chrome springs or black covers with black springs. 444 series - Best Comes with FST (Frequency Sensing Technology) which dynamically adjusts damping, according to road surface. Top mount threaded hand adjustable pre-load. 465 series - Best The 465 series single shock is an improved replacement shock. With a high pressure nitrogen filled black hard anodized aluminum body, a 46mm bore, deflective disc valving with a 16mm precision ground piston rod. Offering top mount threaded hand adjustability or RAP (Remote Adjustable Pre-load), located behind the left passenger peg, for easier accessible adjustments. Rebound damping is 5-position adjustable, special spherical bearings are an improvement over the stock rubber bushing / needle bearing design. Improved damping characteristics with a higher chassis stability and better absorbed irregular pavement, bumps and longitudinal cracks, without OEM harshness. 490 series - Sport Series A true sport performance shock, with a competitive price tag. Features a high pressure nitrogen monotube with deflective disc technology and a linear rate spring for the most consistent feel throughout the damper stroke on both street and track. Preload and rebound adjustability by hand. An engineered jounce bumper with a built-in metal cup smooths and controls bottoming out. 944 series - Best For Touring models. Designed with dual springs to give a 1" lower bike while riding or on the side stand. Still retains full travel and 13" length for uncompromised smooth cruising. Comes with FST (Frequency Sensing Technology) which dynamically adjusts damping, according to road surface. The Ultra Low version drops Street Glides 1" and is a 2" drop for most other Tourings, with minimal loss in ride quality. 970 series - Best Riding a H-D like a sports bike, without giving up on cruising capabilities? The 970 provides top-end engineering and technology in one package. Hand assembled in special clean-rooms for absolute perfection. Features piggyback reservoirs filled with high pressure nitrogen and a floating piston to effectively reduce oil foaming. The shock bodies hold oil and the large deflective disc valve damping system in the monotube style body provide controlled damping with a minimum of piston stick to ensure smooth operation in extreme or subtle movements. Progressive rate springs, threaded wide-range pre-load adjustment and an external compression damping adjustment knob for fine tuning. 990 Sport series - Best Based on the 970 series but designed towards aggressive sport/race inspired riding. No other shock offers this much tuning adjustability. Features include a linear rate coil spring, a 0.4" adjustable eyelet height and adjustable threaded pre-load, a piggyback reservoir (remote for Touring) has a knob to adjust both rebound and high & low speeds compression damping. Featured in a lightweight aluminum body the high-pressure monotube with deflective disc damping routed through two unique circuits delivers a consistent feel through the damper stroke for improved performance and stability. A new and improved engineered jounce bumper features a captured design to help smooth and control bottoming out. Each shock is hand-built & dyno tested to deliver real world performance. Shocks for any kind of rider, from great value for stock replacements to some of the finest shock absorbers on the market today. The USA's premier manufacturer of motorcycle suspension
