LINER SEALS 84-up head gaskets Everybody knows it's far from desirable to burn rubber with a cold engine, for obvious reasons. This is even more true for the Evolution / Twin Cam / M8 engine, which are more sensible for blowing head and base gaskets when doing so. This is because of the different cylinder to cylinder head mounting system when compared to the Knuckle, Pan or Shovel. Be easy on the throttle to prevent the 'cold-start head gasket blowout', especially custom kickstart motors are sensible, and allow the cylinders to warm-up so they can expand and give sufficient pressure to the gaskets. Never blip the throttle on a cold engine. Do not underestimate cylinder length expansion, it is considerable, so always warm-up the engine with minimal load. Upon installation, make sure the head and cylinder gasket surface is totally flat and clean. Overtightening of the head bolts is not recommended, this can stretch the cylinder studs which distorts torque values and may even damage threads in the crankcases. For correct torque values refer to crankcase manufacturer. Make sure the cylinder studs are installed in the cases with red Locktite or similar. Studs have known to work themselves loose after installing the cylinder heads, resulting in decreased torque and therefore blown gaskets. When installing head gaskets with a fire-ring, make sure the wider part of the fire-ring (when present) will face the cylinder and the narrow side of the fire-ring will face the cylinder head (see photo). After the heads are installed, a proper first time engine start-up is critical to ac hieve a permanent and lasting head gasket seal.
