The mounting bolt pattern of an air cleaner must fit the carburetor or, for fuel injected bikes, the throttle body housing. 66-89 Butterfly carburetors Pre-1990 B.T. and Pre-1988 XL Sportster models used a Tillotson (66-70), Bendix (71-75) or Keihin (76-89) carburetor. All come with an easily recognizable butterfly type throttle valve. The air cleaner mounting bolt pattern, on all of these carburetors, is identical. Differences are found in the mounting brackets, which can be bought or custom fabricated. 88-06 Keihin CV carburetor The Keihin Constant Vacuum carburetor is used from 1988-2006 on the XL Sportster and from 1990-2006 on Big Twin models. The air cleaner mounting pattern is different from the older Keihin butterfly carburetors. If your crankcase is vented through the heads (most 91-up models), make sure you have an appropriate air cleaner support bracket and head vent kit. These are, usually, sold separately. 01-23 Fuel Injection On Twin Cam models Delphi style fuel injection is used on 01-17 Softail, 04-17 Dyna and 02-07 on FLT/Touring and from 07-22 on XL Sportster models. The air cleaner mounting pattern on the throttle housing, and most aftermarket throttle bodies, is identical to that of the CV (Constant Vacuum) carburetors. Note that 08-16 Touring, 16-17 Softail and 2017 FXDLS Dyna come with Delphi injection but have an electronic throttle. All electronic throttle Twin Cam models have a different mount pattern. The 2017-up M8 (Milwaukee Eight) Big Twin engines have yet another air cleaner mounting pattern. Make sure you have an appropriate air cleaner support bracket and head vent kit. These are, usually, sold separately.
