BMW R Nine T (excl. R Nine T Scrambler) 14-20 580419 Exhaust blueing Discoloration of an exhaust system, otherwise known as 'blueing', is a heat generated issue. It is not a manufacturing defect, therefore no warranty will be given on any exhaust system that is discolored. Excessive blueing may indicate a mechanical, ignition or fuel problem. Minimizing discoloration is possible by having a well tuned engine, both fuel as ignition wise. Note that many stock bikes cannot be referred to as having a 'well tuned engine' due to emission restriction legislation. Contaminations on the chrome plated surface of the exhaust, as oil, wax and such, can induce discoloration, as can longer periods of idling when tuning or in traffic. Some people coat the inside of the headers, when new, with a heat resistant spray paint as a heat insulator, with varying short time results. Several exhaust manufacturers, as Vance & Hines, supply exhaust systems with 'full length heat shields' which are nearly invisible to the naked eye. These shields will safeguard rider and passenger from exhaust burns and prevent visible 'blueing'. Wrapping the headers in an 'exhaust wrap' will effectively rule out any 'blueing issues', simply since no chrome is visible. Always remember that blueing is natural process, one that long time riders would smile about when referring to blueing as 'a problem'. tech-tip
