To choose the right gauge wire, you will need to know how much Watt (or Amperage) you will draw and what the length of the cable will be. Note: This selection table is based on a 12V system. For 6V systems the Amp. and Watt numbers should be divided in half to find the appropriate wire. Wire gauge Amp. Check out the AWG to Metric conversion table below. Note: Dimensions are plain wire with insulation is removed. Millimeters sizes mentioned are rounded off for convenience sake. Knowledge is a key factor and may even help you save a fortune, or your credibility, when wrenching or ordering parts. Following is a listing of most used calculations and conversion factors. They may be helpful to you when working around Harley-Davidson® and custom motorcycles. DISPLACEMENT Bore" x Bore" x Stroke" x 1.5708 = Displacement in Cubic Inches. Bore" x Bore" x Stroke" x 25.744019 = Displacement in Cubic Centimetres Example: A stock 1340cc Evolution Big Twin has a bore of 3 1/2" and stroke of 4 1/4". Formula: 3.5" x 3.5" x 4.25" x 1.5708 = 81.78 Cu.I. 3.5" x 3.5" x 4.25" x 25.744019 = 1340.29 cc AREA OF A CIRCLE The radius is the diameter of a circle divided in half. Radius x Radius x 3.1416 = Area of a circle Example: A stock 1340cc Evolution Big Twin has a bore of 3 1/2" Formula: 1.75" x 1.75" x 3.1416 = 9.62 Inch² 44.45 mm x 44.45 mm x 3.1416 = 6207.18 mm² (62.0718 cm²) HEAD/BASE GASKET VOLUME Bore x bore x 12.87 x compressed gasket thickness = Gasket volume in cubic centimetres Example: A head gasket has a thickness of 0.045", bore is 3 5/8" Formula: 3.625" x 3.625" x 12.87 x .045" = 7.61 cc SURFACE AREA - INCHES TO METRIC & METRIC TO INCHES Inch² x 6.45 = cm² cm² : 6.45 = Inch² Feet² x 929 = cm² cm² : 929 = Feet² Feet² x 0.0929 = m² m² : 0.0929 = Feet² Yard² x 0.836 = m² m² : 0.836 = Feet² Acre x 4046.8564 = m² m² : 4046.8564 = Acre Acre x 0.4046 = Hectare Hectare : 2.4711 = Acre ELECTRICAL: AMPERAGE, WATT & VOLTS Electrical current can be important to prevent a melt down within the electrical wiring of the motorcycle, or to calculate what fuse you will need for a certain application. Watt divided by Volt = Amp Amp multiplied by Volt = Watt Watt divided by Amp = Volt COMPRESSION RATIO Cylinder displacement + combustion chamber volume, divided by combustion chamber volume. Example: A 1340 cc Big Twin has 670 cc per cylinder. Combustion chamber volume is 72 cc. Formula: 670 + 72 = 742 : 72 = 10.3:1 Compression Ratio (CR) Note: Do not forget to include gasket thickness and valve pockets in the piston when calculating CR. CC-ing the heads (filling with fluid after heads have been installed and piston fluid tight sealed) will give accurate numbers. ELECTRICAL WIRING FORMULAS CONVERSION FACTORS
